Inauguration Lecture: Professor Jakob Demant
From Online Hate to Cybercrime – A Microsociological Approach to Emerging Social Problems
Jakob Demant was appointed as professor at the Department of Sociology on the 1st of November 2024. Professor Demant has been researching social problems from young people’s drug and alcohol use, over darknet markets for drugs, and is currently carrying out a number of studies related to youth crime, online hate and regulation. Demant has also been a central voice in public discussion of the social problems and has through his research contributed with development of interventions.
Crime and deviance have long been central themes in sociology. In this inaugural lecture, Professor Jakob Demant will explore how technological advancements are reshaping these phenomena, leading to the emergence of new forms of online hate and cybercrime. We have been witnessing a shift in online social behavior, particularly among young people that has fostered the creation of a distinct ecosystem where groups and individuals engage in partially hidden behaviors within otherwise open and public online spaces.
Drawing on his research, Professor Demant will discuss how a microsociological perspective can enhance our understanding of online deviance and its social dynamics. This approach offers critical insights into the limitations of existing theories while also highlighting pathways for developing effective and ethical responses to these pressing challenges.
After the lecture, the Department of Sociology will host a reception in room 16-1-62, building 16, where all are welcome.
